The birth story of PĒLL is shared by Ago, one of the founders of the company
When we founded PĒLL, we had two main goals. First, to make cannabis health products significantly more affordable so that they are available to more people who really need them. Another goal was to produce these products from start to finish in Estonia. Today, I think we are succeeding in both goals. The journey to achieving these goals is long. I have been involved in the development of industrial hemp and hemp cultivation in Estonia for many years, it was a logical next step to enter into the very interesting and far from fully discovered world of cannabinoids.
What was your first experience with CBD and what is your favorite PĒLL product?
My first experience was during the development of PĒLL products. I had not tried CBD in this form before, but we started experimenting and of course tried everything on ourselves. Medium extract oil has become a favorite product. I don’t have trouble sleeping, nor do I have any more serious health concerns that Strong extract could address well. But the Medium extract is exactly the right for helping to maintain focus during a busy day , which is good to try, for example, as a month-long intensive course. There are many different cannabinoids inside that are, for example, strong anti-inflammatory agents, repair the immune and nervous system in a very complex way, etc. It also has an immediate effect on removing bugging daytime anxiety, this feeling like everything crashes on top of our heads.
Where did the inspiration for PĒLL come from?
This is a funny story. On one hand, my family is from South Estonia, Mulgid. Once we visited them in Karksi-Nuia and went to a shop, where we got a free local newspaper, which we took with us. At home, my son and I started making a fire and we used the same local newspaper to light the fire. I opened the newspaper from a random place and there was an article: ,,Pell, South Estonia’s good home visitor, or good home spirit”. In the old days, all people who lived in connection with nature had their own good spirit, who was worshiped and sacrificed to, to whom was appealed to so that there would be good luck. Pell – upon closer examination of this name, it turned out that in our region it also meant curing a disease by blowing, which was used by shamans. In other words, a word with a cool background, which broadly means nature, and it fits our profile perfectly.
How does PĒLL differ from other manufacturers?
A good product cannot be produced without good raw materials. In order to know what goes into the product, we need to know what is in the raw material. In other words, we have to be able to guarantee the quality of the raw materials ourselves. There are some limits, but we have aimed for such an approach that we also grow the raw materials ourselves. We process it into an extract and finally put the finished product in a jar. It sounded easier than it really is.
Today we have end products that are praised by customers and extraction equipment that we have done production trials with. However, it has turned out to be more difficult than we first thought. But if we want to be a certified organic producer, we have to control the production processes from start to finish, because there are already enough producers who don’t know what they are doing :). PĒLL doesn’t just want to produce raw materials with certain specifications, but to really understand what does what and how it affects the body.
What are PĒLL’s future plans?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, which started the whole cannabinoid boom, is clearly only the tip of the iceberg today. Yes, isolates, or individual isolated substances, work for some specific things, but in the big picture, they are still narrowly effective. The focus is on extracts, which contain a set of different substances that come from the plant. Based on the literature and the latest scientific research, as well as on the basis of customer feedback, the extracts work on the body in a more versatile way and for a longer period of time.
Already today, several of our products were born based on customer feedback. We have chosen a time- and resource-intensive path, but in the long run I believe it is sustainable. If we want to be innovative and offer a high-quality product at a controlled price, the only right way, in the long run, is to do all these steps ourselves. Hopefully, we will be able to produce with our own extraction equipment in the coming autumn. And the last thing left is the production of raw materials, with which we have been experimenting for two years and we are learning new information every day.
